How to do hair toning at home
Toning is a painting technology in which coloring is performed exclusively with ammonia-free compounds. They do not penetrate deep into the rod, but remain on the surface of the curl.
This helps to minimize trauma to dry and combined strands.
This technology explains how toning differs from hair dyeing.
The technique can be used independently, for example, to give curls a certain shade or get out of the usual color (blondes often change their hair color to light brown or natural blonde with the help of toning).
But now it is mainly used to remove yellowness after staining with ombre, shatush or balayazh.
Toning over highlights
A similar coloring can be performed on dark and light hair, after highlighting and bronzing, depending on the desired result.
It is quite difficult to dye natural hair at home, but toning after lightening can be done even by a non-professional. The easiest way is to use a special shampoo or shampoo.
The effect will be no less striking than after a standard coloring session, but the procedure will be as safe as possible.
To eliminate yellowness, the most affordable option is to wash your hair with a toning agent (Tonic, Estelle and others):
- You can safely choose a shade much lighter than your own (if clarification is required). At the same time, brown-haired women should understand that shampoo and balm will not have an effect on dark hair;
- A small amount of dye is applied to wet strands. It needs to be left on the curls for a while, then rinse off with cool water and use an air conditioner;
The procedure can be repeated if necessary.
This is ideal for shading highlights or lightening a few strands of blondes.
But on black curls, the effectiveness of the effect is questionable. For brunettes, professional toning is more suitable.
Dark hair toning
For dark beauties, there are many options for dyeing curls. The most popular types of painting now are:
- Ombre. A combination of several shades of painting, where the ends are discolored, and the roots are either darkened or left as they are;
- Shatush. A technique very similar to ombre except for the gradient line. In the ombre, it is clear, and in the shatush it is smoother and more vague;
- Balayazh. It is made for both long and short. It consists in stretching the color from the tips to the roots along the entire length. Due to this, the effect of volumetricness and glare is created.
In order for such a fashionable coloring to look more spectacular, and the white strands stand out in more contrast against the general background, the dark areas are toned. To create a bright transition, shades are used that are 1–2 shades darker than natural.
Dark hair tinting technology:
- The head is zoned into several sections - the craftsmen use the quarter system.When all strands are divided into 4 equal zones;
- Depending on the type of staining chosen, the strands are combed or, on the contrary, combed and discolored in the foil. To do this, a brightening composition is applied to their surface. It is recommended to use dyes without ammonia - they are less harmful to the hair structure;
- After 20-30 minutes, the clarification is considered complete. On the dark areas of the strands that have not been colored, a tinting composition of the desired shade is applied. Coloring experts advise avoiding harsh unnatural colors, it is better to focus on natural ones: dark chocolate, chestnut, etc.;
- A solution with a tint is applied to the surface of the strand. It covers the roots, but does not touch discolored areas. Withstands, depending on the recommendations of the manufacturers, from 20 to 40 minutes;
- The final stage is ammonia-free toning of the lightened ends. To do this, it is better to choose the lightest shade possible - it will be able to completely remove yellowness and "play" in contrast.
On natural hair, the toning shade lasts up to 2 months on average. The term depends on the frequency of washing and the shampoos used.
To prolong the brightness of the color, use gentle shampoos and conditioners for colored curls.
Toning blonde hair
As with brunettes, there are different hair toning options for blondes. Most Popular:
- Booking. Some strands are dyed dark, due to which the curls look more neat and stylish. Sometimes only the roots are darkened - this technique is also called ombre;
- Toning, to remove yellowness. As soon as the girls are not struggling with the "cheap" yellow tint on the blonde. With the help of special tools and technologies, even the most unsuccessful staining can be corrected (up to the elimination of the orange shade on the discolored head).
There are two ways to remove yellow strands on your own: use a tonic or prepare a gentle composition of shampoo, paint and balm. Consider the pros and cons of both options.
In the first case - tonic staining, the main advantage is simplicity. But its effectiveness is questionable: the tool is not able to completely eliminate a pronounced yellow tint and is quickly washed out.
The second option is more difficult to implement, but it gives a lasting effect. Proven homemade tonic recipe for bleached hair:
- A teaspoon of paint of the desired shade without ammonia is squeezed into a non-metallic container. A palette with ashy notes is recommended. For example, ash blond or pearl white;
- One tablespoon of balm, shampoo and hydrogen peroxide are added to the same container. Do not be alarmed, the peroxide in this composition acts as an oxidizing agent;
- After that, you need to add a spoonful of water to the mixture to liquefy the composition. The resulting mass is applied along the entire length of the hair and left for 10 minutes.
The result is a persistent and very beautiful toning that will not leave a trace of yellowness.
A separate advantage of this recipe is that painting is much safer than standard re-discoloration, and the color does not wash off.
Toning for light brown hair
Natural brown hair often has an ugly yellow tint. Especially if after summer the curls have faded or the procedure of unsuccessful staining has been carried out. To solve these problems, colorist hairdressers actively recommend the toning procedure.
To give your blond hair a light ash shade, it will be enough to wash the curls with a special tinted shampoo several times a month.
- The already light natural color does not need additional artificial lightening.
If you want to make the tone lighter or to emphasize the strands after coloring, it is recommended to carry out toning with gentle paints. For such a lightening, a light shade is selected, which is applied exclusively for 10 minutes of instructions, similar to for blondes.
Longer exposure may lighten light brown too much.
Toning gray hair
Reviews claim that toning gray hair can solve the problem of individual silver strands without dyeing. But in salon conditions, hairdressers use exclusively semi-permanent paint, since it lasts longer.
How to tint gray strands:
- At home, you can use mousse, toning shampoo, coloring hair balm. For independent use in this situation, it is not recommended to work with semi-permanent paint, since only an experienced colorist will be able to determine how long to keep it. If this factor is not taken into account, then the benefits of such toning will be very doubtful;
- The composition is applied to the entire surface of the strands - from roots to ends. It is important to distribute it evenly so that there are no shade differences. Some products may not be kept at all (applied and washed off), while others are important to withstand up to 15 minutes. Therefore, read the instructions for use carefully;
- You also need to wash your hair from roots to ends, rubbing the strands thoroughly to wash out all the applied product. Be sure to use a balm.
You need to repeat this toning not in time (for example, once every two weeks), but when the tone begins to wash out. On gray strands, this process is much faster than on light or dark ones. In most cases, correction is needed after 10 days.
Red hair toning
Unfortunately, even professional hair toning products in the salon and at home are not able to adequately lighten the redhead.
The problem lies in the very dense pigment that appears even when you try the slightest lightening.
The maximum that can be done:
- Shade the natural redhead to make it brighter and more juicy;
- Make a colorless toning to restore hair and obtain a lamination effect.
For the second method, not coloring, but reducing compositions are used. They do not harm the strands at all, help to give them smoothness and softness, and also eliminate excess fluffiness after coloring.
How to do toning for red hair:
- The desired shade is selected. As we have already said, using a tone lighter than natural simply does not make sense, so we recommend opting for natural dark redheads;
- You can color individual strands, having previously combed them - this will give the hairstyle visual volume and color transitions, as in ombre. Or shade all the curls;
- If you chose the first option, then certain curls are separated from the hair, which are combed and processed with a dye composition. To speed up the reaction, they can be wrapped in foil. If the second, then the procedure repeats the standard painting process.
Even dye on red hair lasts longer than on all others. Therefore, if you do not wash your hair every day, the toning effect will last up to 3 weeks.
Hair tinting after highlighting and bleaching
Even the most beautiful highlights require subsequent toning in order for the shade to be uniform. You can use tonics or professional dyes.
Experts recommend combining several shades - this will allow you to get the desired color without yellowness and incomprehensible bluish or pink highlights.
Step-by-step instructions on how to tint highlighted or bleached hair:
- The entire heap is divided into separate zones. It can be one central and two temporal, two central and two temporal, etc.;
- The paint is diluted according to the instructions or mixed (if there is experience). Application takes place with a wide brush from roots to tips. Tinted strands are wrapped in foil;
- The composition is kept on strands from 15 to 20 minutes. As a result, this toning of hair after lightening will give the effect of naturally white curls with some darkened areas of a natural color.
Do I need to discolor before toning
- On blonde hair any tone will fit well, which means that blondes do not need to once again expose their curls to the aggressive effects of clarifiers.
- In brunettes and redheads the situation is somewhat different. With the help of toning, they will not be able to radically change the hair color, it will differ from the original by 1-3 tones. If a dramatic change in the color of the hairstyle is required, then before tinting, you must first lighten the hair.
However, there are several nuances in toning bleached hair:
- The tinting procedure can be carried out no earlier than 2 days after clarification.
- If bleached hair is severely damaged, then it is better to refuse tinting in order to avoid uneven coloring.
- If a perm procedure was carried out on the hair, then it is recommended to refuse toning for at least 2 months.
Disadvantages and Benefits
The main dignity hair coloring with tonics are as follows:
- Hair after toning remains intact and healthy, since the product, as already mentioned, does not penetrate into the hair.
- The dyeing procedure is suitable for those girls who like to experiment with their appearance, since the new shade lasts on curls from several days to 2 months.
- The dyeing border between the dyeing zone and the hair roots is invisible.
- Many toning products have caring components that make curls beautiful and healthy.
However, this staining procedure has some drawbacks. Minuses toning, according to experts, are as follows:
- Since this pigment is quickly washed out of the hair, they will have to be tinted regularly.
- It is impossible to radically change the color of your curls.
- The result will depend on the base color of the curls. The fact is that all tinting agents beautifully and naturally fall only on evenly dyed curls. Otherwise, a sharp shade transition appears on the hair, which emphasizes the sloppy hairstyle.
Concerning the cost of toning, then it will depend on several factors: the complexity of the technique, the thickness and length of the hair, as well as the chosen product.
RULES FOR HAIR TONING FOR BEGINNERS
Before proceeding with the toning procedure, you need to pay attention to such an important point as the use of henna. Before toning your hair, it is best to refuse to use this coloring agent, since very often henna interacts with the tonic, which will subsequently lead to unexpected color results.
If the tinting procedure is new to you or you are not sure of the correct choice of the color of the tinting agent, then in this case it is better if, before the main painting, you try to paint over only one strand of hair with a new color.
It should also be remembered that for girls with a perm or for those who have previously dyed their hair, the result from dyeing with a tonic may not be quite what is expected.
Hair tinting options
Colorless toning
Hair tinting (photo before and after is attached) without changing the shade of the strands is a relatively new technique. It is also called "shielding". During the procedure, the curls are treated with a colorless toning compound that envelops each hair in a kind of film.
The procedure has some similarities with lamination and is performed to improve the general condition and appearance of the hair. It gives them a noble shine and additional volume, helps in the fight against naughty curls - after colorless tinting, they lend themselves better to styling.
Also, covering the hair with a colorless composition helps to prolong the effect after dyeing. Due to the enveloping of the hair, the pigment is fixed inside it for a much longer period of time.
Intensive
These formulations contain a variety of oxidizing ingredients to provide longer, more intense color.You can use these products for toning gray hair. The result usually lasts up to several months. This technology is chosen if you want to lighten the curls by one tone or make them darker by several tones.
For a more intense toning of curls, you will need semi-permanent paint.
Sparing
With this type of staining, the color stays on the curls from 2 weeks to 1 month. But in order to maintain the effect of toning, the procedure must be repeated quite often. As a dye, mainly ammonia-free dye and hair tonic are used.
Lung
As a rule, this pigment is washed out from the hair after the first shampooing. For such light toning, cosmetics are used, which should include professional shampoos for toning hair, balms, sprays, crayons, mascara, as well as natural dyes, for example, tea or chamomile.
How to get an ashy shade
The tone of the coloring agent should be matched to the original hair color. To give an ashy shade to dark strands, you need to carry out intensive toning with the selected cold shade of "ash".
It is desirable that it be several shades darker than the original hair color. It is much easier for blond girls to achieve an ashy shade. It is enough for them to use shampoo or balm of the chosen shade.
Sometimes, after unsuccessful dyeing, an ugly yellow tint appears on white hair. There are 2 ways to neutralize it. You can use a tinting composition, but the effect of its application will last for a very modest period of time.
For the same purposes, it is possible to prepare a gentle coloring composition that will not harm the hair and will last much longer than the tonic.
To prepare it you need:
- Squeeze 1 tsp into a prepared container (not metal). semi-permanent paint of an ashy shade.
- Add 1 tbsp to the paint. l. shampoo, balm and hydrogen peroxide.
To liquefy and more evenly apply to the mixture, add 1 tbsp. l. water, mix the composition and apply to hair. Leave to act for 10 minutes.
How to remove tinting agent
- Homemade hair masks. Low-fat kefir or one of the vegetable oils such as olive, burdock, sunflower is mixed with apple juice.
- American shampoo. Made by yourself. It is necessary to mix the lightening powder and shampoo in a 1: 1 ratio, apply to clean, damp hair, massage the product into lather. The effect is checked on individual strands and washed off when the desired result is achieved.
- Wash off. A gentle dye and hair remover can be purchased from your specialist retailer.
- Toning agents will appeal to those who like to change their image often and want to keep their hair healthy.
Hair tinting products
And now we will take a closer look at the tools that can be used to tone hair.
Shampoo
The most popular and affordable tint is shampoo. The rich color of this composition should not scare, because after its application, the curls differ from the previous color by only 1 tone. With the help of shampoo, it is possible to neutralize an unpleasant color after some unsuccessful experiment with your hair.
The most popular shampoos are from L'oreal and Kapous.
Spray
This group of tinting agents is used for an instant effect that can appear immediately after the first use. Such a product exists in the product line from the manufacturer L'oreal. This tool stains overgrown roots, and also perfectly hides gray curls.
It is recommended to use it between permanent stains.
Mousse
These hair cosmetics combine two properties: the ability to style and tone. It is quite easy to apply the mousse to your hair as it does not flow.Among all the means for toning curls, this is the safest, since an unexpected result is excluded here. The only drawback is that this toner rinses off pretty quickly.
When choosing a product, professionals give preference to the following brands: Wellaton, Palette, Igora, L’oreal.
Tinting paint
After using this hair tinting tool (you can see the before and after photos in the article), the curls remain intact and healthy. And the effect after applying the tinting paint lasts for several months.
This product is manufactured by the brands Matrix and Estel.
The choice of paint and improvised means
The most difficult thing in toning is choosing the right product for the procedure. Consider the most popular products for coloring and shading:
- Estelle paint Estel Sense De Luxe (this is a toning palette) - ideal for light shading of hair. It does not contain ammonia and is durable, affordable and easy to use. Brightens and removes yellowness much better than bleaching powder and with minimal harm;
- Londa from the series Intensive toning Is a demi-permanent dye. Londa is able to paint over gray hair and remove yellow from white curls. You need to buy it simply because it is incredibly delicate and easy to use. This series also includes products for colorless tinting;
- MATRIX Color Sync helps to create perfect natural colors on hair. This is chestnut without redness, ash-blond, beige blond and many others. After use, leaves a glazing effect - gives shine and strength, so additional care is not needed;
- Schwarzkopf Professional Igora Vibrance - perfectly copes with painting over yellowness and shading light curls. But reviews claim that this is not the best option for dark strands because of the redness inherent in brown and red shades;
- Hair dye without ammonia L'OREAL Dialight (Loreal Dialayt) also suitable for toning. But it is she who is more often used by brunettes than by blondes. The color palette is wide, the coloring effect lasts up to 3 weeks.
- Many forums point out paints from Wella Touch (Vella), Kapus and Ollin. They are more affordable than most of the tools described above, and have similar properties. But after Vella there is no glazing effect, and the Kapus is quickly washed off.
Of course, the duration and brightness of the color largely depends on what kind of shampoo is used for toned hair. We recommend giving preference to professional brands - Brelil, Igora, Loreal.
